IELTS Speaking — Full Practice Test 3

Parts 1, 2 & 3 · about 11–14 minutes · all questions and model answers are original CILL material at real IELTS difficulty.

How to take this test: Speaking cannot be auto-scored, so treat this as a real practice: say every answer out loud — ideally record yourself on your phone. Work through Part 1, then Part 2 (use the 1-minute preparation timer, then speak for up to 2 minutes), then Part 3. Only after you have spoken, open the model answer for each question, compare it with your own recording, and use the self-assessment checklist in Part 2 to estimate your band.
Part 1 — Interview4–5 minutes · familiar topics

The examiner asks about yourself and everyday topics. Keep answers 2–3 sentences — always add a reason, an example or a detail rather than a one-word reply.

Topic: Technology & phones. Answer each question aloud first, then reveal a model. Notice how each model gives a reason or example rather than a bare answer.

1How often do you use your mobile phone?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Honestly, far more than I probably should — it’s the first thing I check in the morning and the last at night. Most of it is genuinely useful, like messages and study apps, but I’ll admit a fair bit is just mindless scrolling.”

Notice: honest, self-aware answer with natural phrasing (mindless scrolling).

2What do you mainly use it for?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Mostly for staying in touch and for studying, actually. I use messaging apps to keep up with family and friends, and I’ve got a couple of apps I rely on for learning English and organising my notes. Entertainment comes third, I suppose.”

Notice: ranks uses (mostly … third) instead of a flat list.

3Could you manage without your phone for a day?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“I’d like to think so, but in all honesty I’d probably find it quite hard. So much of daily life runs through it now — payments, directions, work messages — that going without it for a whole day would be genuinely inconvenient rather than just boring.”

Notice: a hypothetical answered with honesty and concrete examples.

4Do you think people rely on technology too much?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“In some ways, yes. It’s made us incredibly efficient, but I do worry that we’re losing certain skills — a lot of people, myself included, can barely remember a phone number or navigate without GPS anymore. So it’s a bit of a double-edged sword.”

Notice: a balanced view with a relevant idiom (double-edged sword).idiom

5Is there any technology you would like to use better?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Definitely — I’d love to get properly to grips with video editing software. I make the odd travel video for fun, but I only know the basics, so learning to use it well is something I keep meaning to do.”

Notice: specific answer with a reason and natural phrasing (get to grips with).
Part 2 — The long turn3–4 minutes · 1 min prep + up to 2 min talk

Read the card, then use the 1-minute preparation timer to make quick notes. When it ends, start the 2-minute timer and speak until it stops, covering all four points.

Describe a possession that is important to you (something you own that you would not want to lose).
You should say:
  • what it is
  • how you got it
  • how long you have had it
  • and explain why it is important to you.
1:00
2:00
What it is

“The possession I’d choose is my camera — a second-hand mirrorless camera that I use for photography, which has become one of my favourite things in the world.”

How you got it

“I bought it myself, actually, with money I’d saved up from my part-time job over about a year. I remember researching for weeks before finally buying it from someone online, and I was almost nervous handing over that much money.”

How long you’ve had it

“I’ve had it for roughly three years now, and it’s barely left my side since — it’s come with me on every trip and to every family gathering.”

Why it’s important

“It’s important to me for two main reasons. Firstly, photography has become a real passion, and this camera is what turned it from a casual hobby into something I take seriously — it taught me to actually look at the world more carefully. Secondly, and maybe more importantly, it holds thousands of memories: every photo of my family and friends is on there, so even though it’s just an object, losing it would feel like losing a piece of my history. That’s why I look after it so carefully.”

The same long turn at each band

Read from the bottom up and listen for what changes: fluency (fewer pauses, no restarts), range of vocabulary, grammar (varied, accurate sentences) and coherence (all four points, well linked). Find the one closest to how you spoke.

Band 8.0

“The possession I want to describe is my camera. It’s a second-hand mirrorless camera that I use for photography. I bought it myself with money I saved from my part-time job over about a year, and I got it from someone online after researching for a long time.

I’ve had it for around three years now and I take it almost everywhere. It’s important to me for two reasons. First, photography has become a real passion and this camera made me take it seriously. Second, it holds so many memories — all my photos of family and friends are on it, so losing it would feel like losing part of my history.”

Why Band 8.0: fluent, all four points, good range and accuracy; a few more natural, idiomatic touches would reach 9.
Band 7.0

“I would like to talk about my camera. It is a mirrorless camera and I use it to take photos. I bought it with my own money that I saved from my part-time job, and I bought it from a person on the internet.

I have this camera for about three years and I take it with me when I travel. It is important to me because I love photography and this camera helped me to improve. Also there are many photos of my family and friends inside it, so it has a lot of memories for me. That is why I don’t want to lose it.”

Why Band 7.0: all points covered and generally accurate, but the vocabulary is a bit simple and one grammar slip (I have this camera for).
Band 6.0

“I want to describe my camera. It is a camera for photography. I bought it myself with the money from my part-time job. I got it from online.

I have it since three years. I take many photos with it, in the trips and in the family programs. It is important because I like photography very much and I improve with this camera. And there are many photos of my family in it, so it has many memories. I take care of it a lot.”

Why Band 6.0: covers the points but with pauses and simple language, plus errors (since three years, family programs). More detail and linking would raise it.
Band 5.5

“I describe my camera. It is my important thing. I buy it with my own money from part-time job. I take it from online.

I have this camera three years. I take photo of my family and friend and also in travel. It is important because I like photography and this camera have many memory of my family. I don’t want to lose it. That’s all.”

Why Band 5.5: the points are just about there, but the talk is short with frequent errors (I buy, this camera have, many memory). Speaking longer and fixing tenses are the quickest gains.

Mark your own long turn

Listen back to your recording and tick each box you can honestly say is true. These four rows are the exact criteria an examiner uses in Speaking — each is worth 25% of your band.

Fluency & Coherence — did it flow?
Lexical Resource — vocabulary
Grammatical Range & Accuracy — grammar
Pronunciation — clarity
Part 3 — Discussion4–5 minutes · deeper, more abstract

The examiner asks broader questions linked to Part 2. Give longer, more developed answers — state an opinion, give reasons, and add an example or compare past and present.

Topic: Possessions & consumerism. Answer aloud, then reveal a model. Notice how Part 3 answers are longer and more analytical.

1Why do some people like to own expensive things?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“I think it often comes down to status. For many people, expensive possessions are a visible signal of success, a way of showing others — and perhaps themselves — that they’ve done well in life. For a smaller group, though, it’s genuinely about quality; they’d rather buy one well-made item that lasts than replace a cheap one repeatedly.”

Notice: identifies two different motivations (status vs quality) — analytical depth.

2Do you think people today buy more than they need?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Absolutely, and I’d say it’s become a real problem. Advertising and online shopping have made buying almost effortless, so we’re constantly tempted by things we didn’t even know we wanted. The result is a lot of waste, both financially and environmentally, which is why movements like minimalism have started to gain popularity.”

Notice: a firm opinion with cause (advertising) and consequence (waste) plus an example.

3Are older or younger people usually more attached to their possessions?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“That’s interesting — I’d say they’re attached to different things. Older generations often value objects for their sentimental history, like something passed down through the family, whereas younger people tend to be attached to technology and brands. So it’s less about how much and more about what and why.”

Notice: reframes the question insightfully rather than giving a flat comparison.

4Do you think people will own fewer physical things in the future?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Quite possibly, yes. So much has already gone digital — music, books, photos — and services like streaming and subscriptions mean we increasingly ‘access’ things rather than own them. I suspect that trend will continue, although I doubt physical possessions will ever disappear completely, because people still form emotional attachments to real objects.”

Notice: a prediction with evidence (digital trend) and a sensible qualification.
