“I absolutely love it — it’s probably my favourite way to spend my free time and money. There’s something about being in a completely new place, out of your normal routine, that I find really energising, even when things don’t go to plan.”

“I’m definitely drawn to nature over cities. I’d take mountains, forests or the coast over a busy shopping district any day, mainly because I do it to relax and disconnect, and being surrounded by greenery is what does that for me.”
3Do you prefer travelling alone or with others?

“Mostly with others, I’d say. Sharing an experience with friends or family makes the good moments better and the difficult ones funnier in hindsight. That said, I do think everyone should travel solo at least once, because it really pushes you out of your comfort zone.”
4Has the way people travel changed since you were a child?

“Enormously, yes. When I was young, planning a trip meant guidebooks and travel agents, whereas now you can book everything on your phone in minutes and see reviews of a hotel before you go. It’s far more convenient, though maybe a little less adventurous.”
5Where would you like to travel in the future?

“Top of my list is Japan, without a doubt. I’m fascinated by the way it blends ancient tradition with cutting-edge technology, and I’d love to experience that contrast in person — ideally during the cherry-blossom season.”

Who you went with“I went with a group of about six close friends from university. We’d been planning it for months as a kind of celebration after our final exams, so there was a lovely sense of freedom and excitement about the whole trip.”
What you did there“We spent three days on a small boat that took us deep into the forest. During the day we’d go out in smaller canoes to spot wildlife — we were incredibly lucky to see spotted deer, crocodiles and, from a safe distance, even the fresh pugmarks of a tiger. In the evenings we just sat on the deck, cooked together and talked for hours under an amazing sky full of stars.”
Why it was memorable“It was memorable for a few reasons. Partly it was the sheer wildness of the place — being somewhere so remote and untouched really put things into perspective. But mostly it was the company; sharing that adventure with my closest friends, right at the end of our student life, made it feel really special, almost like the closing chapter of an era. Even now, it’s the trip we all bring up whenever we get together.”
Read from the bottom up and listen for what changes: fluency (fewer pauses, no restarts), range of vocabulary, grammar (varied, accurate sentences) and coherence (all four points, well linked). 1Why do people like to travel to other countries?

“I think the main draw is experiencing something genuinely different — a new culture, food, language and way of life that you simply can’t get at home. Beyond the enjoyment, travel also broadens your perspective; meeting people who live very differently tends to make you more open-minded and, honestly, more grateful for what you have.”
2What are the benefits of tourism for a country?

“Economically, it can be huge — tourism creates jobs and brings in foreign money, which is especially important for developing countries. There’s also a cultural benefit: when a country welcomes visitors, it often invests in preserving its heritage and natural sites, and it helps build understanding between different cultures.”
3Does tourism have any negative effects?

“Unfortunately, yes. Too many visitors can damage the very places they come to see — think of eroded trails or polluted beaches — and it can push up prices for locals in popular areas. There’s also a cultural downside, where places start to feel like a performance for tourists rather than authentic communities. So it really needs to be managed carefully.”
4Do you think people will travel more or less in the future?

“On balance I think more, at least in the long term. As incomes rise around the world, travel becomes affordable to more people, and it’s become such a normal aspiration now. The one thing that might slow it down is growing awareness of its environmental cost, so I’d expect people to travel more but hopefully in more responsible ways.”
